Mark Hunt’s Weather Assessment
8th – 15th February 2010

Regular readers of this column will have noticed by now that the 2nd part of last weeks weather forecast hasn't transpired, i.e rain reaching Ireland Sunday and high winds over the weekend although Friday did give a small glimpse of spring, the sun came out and we touched 10°C, the first time we've hit double figures this year.

Now for the bad news, the mild weather that we've enjoyed for a few days will quickly slip away and this is because the jetstream is due to sink south of the UK and thus allow a cold, North and Easterly wind flow to take charge for the coming week at the very least. So it's back to winter this week with frosts on most nights and an ever-increasing chance of snow, particularly for the East and South-East of England. The threat increases as the week goes on as far as I can see with Thursday, Friday and Saturday the days to watch, though there will be a chance of wintery showers before that, particularly down the east coast.

At the moment I can't see a change from this cold weather even 10 days on from now. However, the weather is never straight-forward and just as it changed this week, it could easily do the same again.

I hope you took advantage of that mild spell because I think that there is not going to be much this week growth-wise. On the plus side, it should stop any disease activity in its tracks.
