The year started extremely cold, in most parts of the UK and Ireland it was the coldest for the last 13 years with February in particular notable for extended snow cover in some areas for up to two weeks. When this eventually receded, the soil temperature bounced up to 6°C and above, by the end of the month and aside from a growth check at the end of March, has remained above Growth Initiation temperature since then.Moving into April, the month has been characterised by cold nights and warm days (shown in light blue on the graph opposite) and this has pegged the soil temperature back around 10 - 12°C for most of the month, with the trace showing significant fluctuations on a week by week basis, highlighting the effect of night frosts which, incidentally, have extended into the beginning of May with many areas experiencing a frost on the 3rd May.
